The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon suffered their opening World Cup of Qatar 2022 defeat to Switzerland. It’s interesting to note that Swiss star Breel Embolo, who was born in Cameroon, scored the game’s only goal against Karl Toko Ekambi and his teammates in Group G’s opening match.
The game’s lone goal was scored in the second half by the Yaoundé-born 25-year-old Swiss international. Even as his teammates came around him to congratulate him on the goal, Embolo refused to do so. Instead, he raised his hand and gestured at the Swiss supporters first, then the Cameroonian supporters at the stadium’s opposing corner.
Cameroon, which put on a strong performance in the first, will feel unfairly treated by the outcome. Despite dominating possession and being the superior team in the first half, the offensive line of Mbeumo Choupo Toko had to contend with a superb Swiss goalkeeper.
The Indomitable Lions will still have to play Serbia in their next game and perennial favorites Brazil and its five stars, so this result does not make their situation any better.
Switzerland’s victory over Cameroon was a valiant effort, and it extended their streak of five consecutive appearances on football’s biggest platform without dropping their opening World Cup game.
Thursday night’s matchup features Serbia and Brazil.
