Australia merely needed to avoid losing in order to advance to the World Cup, but the Socceroos went above and above on Saturday by defeating Tunisia 1-0.
Australia won its first match at football’s greatest event since a triumph over Serbia in 2010 thanks to a header from Mitchell Duke midway through the first half.
Despite losing 4-1 to the defending champions France in their opening encounter, the outcome means that Australia still has a chance to advance to the round of 16.
Tunisia will play France in the final round of group games on Wednesday, and Australia will play Denmark.
