On Friday, Senegal defeated Qatar 3-1 in the World Cup opener after a defensive blunder gave the African champion the lead.
After Qatari defender Boualem Khoukhi attempted to make a clearing under no pressure, failed to connect correctly, and fell on his backside, striker Boulaye Dia hammered in the opening goal.
With a header from a corner at the start of the second half, Famara Diedhiou increased the score to 2-0.
With a header to make it 2-1, Qatar’s replacement Mohammed Muntari gave the home team some hope. However, the Qatari comeback only lasted six minutes before Bamba Dieng once again gave Senegal a two-goal lead.
If Netherlands and Ecuador tie in the other Group A game, Qatar, which has lost both of its games, would be eliminated later on Friday and less than a week into the World Cup.
