In the nail-biting final group game on Friday, Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored a hat trick in the first half after Ghana’s Andre Ayew missed a penalty.
However, South Korea defeated Portugal 2-1 in the other Group H encounter to advance ahead of Uruguay into the elimination rounds.
Portugal led the group with seven points, South Korea was second with four, Uruguay was third with four, and Ghana was last with three.
