In the upcoming 26 months, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will move into a new headquarters.
This was declared at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. Chinese government money is being used to finance the project.
The ceremony that took place over the weekend happened on the same day when heads of state gathered for an ordinary summit to discuss urgent concerns affecting the region.
The current ECOWAS chairman, Umaru Sissoco Embalo, Nigeria’s Muhammadu Buhari, and Sierra Leone’s Julius Maada Bio were all seen in pictures from the ceremony on the organization’s official Twitter account.
The caption of the tweet read: “The Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS laid the Foundation of a new ECOWAS Headquarters building on December 4, 2022 in Abuja, Nigeria.
“The new headquarters Project which is being financed by the Chinese Government through China Aid is expected to be completed in 26 months.”
The ECOWAS Commission, Community Court of Justice, and ECOWAS Parliament will all have their Abuja-based headquarters in the new ECOWAS Headquarters.
The most recent project to receive Chinese funding is this one. China has built parliaments in the Republic of Congo, Congo, and most recently Zimbabwe. It also funded the present African Union headquarters in Ethiopia.
