With the inauguration of the annual Christmas Village in the city’s center, people in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, have started getting into the holiday spirit.
A downtown park with a five-star hotel had holiday decorations lit up on Saturday night, and locals from all walks of life gathered to enjoy them.
As hundreds of people strolled around the park under thousands of dazzling stars, the Christmas lights were coupled with a wonderful evening of music and entertainment.
This year, Nigerians have seen growing living expenses and gasoline shortages, so the brilliant lights that are independent of the country’s energy infrastructure and its frequent power outages were a welcome sight.
Alex Ijeoma, a 34-year-old nurse, said she wanted to enjoy herself and leave the difficulties of the previous year behind her. “Despite the difficulties, the ups and downs that we have faced as a nation, as a people, this Christmas I’m extremely grateful to God that we have finally seen the end of the year. I’m genuinely here to relax and simply have fun, you know, to leave all the problems and hardships behind me. stated Ijeoma.
Adult admission to the festival of lights is 3500 naira ($US), while kids are admitted free.
The illuminations will last until December 31st, when a celebration to ring in the new year is scheduled.
