The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations would be held in the Benin Republic, according to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), who have stated they are not aware of a joint bid with that country.
The AFCON was last hosted by Nigeria in 2000, when it shared hosting duties with Ghana.
However, there have been recent rumours that Nigeria and Benin will collaborate to host Africa’s premier event.
Felix Anyansi-Agwu, the NFF’s first vice president, reportedly put an end to such negotiations, according to a story in The Guardian.
“I am not aware of such a bid by Nigeria. In fact, I am just hearing this information for the first time,” Anyansi-Agwu said.
“I don’t think such an arrangement is in progress. I don’t know anything about the AFCON bid.”
Guinea was previously slated to host the AFCON in 2025. However, CAF revoked the rights as a result of its failure to comply with its requirements.
Since the Under-17 World Cup in 2009, Nigerian football has not played host to a significant competition. Given Nigeria’s history in football, hosting a major tournament like the AFCON would be a significant accomplishment.
