The “heinous and senseless” murder of Omobolanle Raheem, a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), by police officers who were on duty on Christmas Day has been denounced by President Buhari.
The President issued a statement through his media assistant, Garba Shehu, in which he expressed his astonishment and sadness over the senseless killing and ordered the police to take “the harshest possible measures” against those responsible, who were already being taken in custody.
President Buhari stated that this incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat of improper handling of weapons and serves as a wake-up call to law enforcement agencies, including the Police, to ensure the full implementation of reforms instituted by the administration on the subject of improper handling of weapons as well as the protection of the public.
“In this hour of grief, the nation stands in solidarity with the bereaved family and the NBA. I assure that justice will be done in this case,” the President was quoted as saying.
On December 25, 2022, a police officer shot and killed late Bolanle, who was seven months pregnant. She was travelling in the car with her husband, their only child, her sister’s children, and her sister.
