Yoweri Museveni, the president of Uganda, has called same-sex campaigning “nonsense.”
He has since issued a warning to anyone who support the rights of LGBT (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, and queer) individuals.
He explained his attendance at an African Heads of State conference in the United States in mid-December 2022 while speaking at a graduation ceremony for senior military leaders on January 18, 2023.
The president said: “Don’t bring any more nonsense here… We were in Washington, [and] this time the Americans organized the meeting well because they didn’t bring up these issues.
“They concentrated on business which was good. They didn’t bring up issues about homosexuality. But if they would have brought those we would have had problems,” he stressed.
In Uganda, homosexuality is forbidden.
One of the most outspoken African leaders against same-sex relationships, Museveni describes it as foreign to African culture and traditions. Security personnel have repeatedly detained persons who are supposedly attending gay parties.
