According to a gold mining firm, three workers were murdered in a blast in western Kenya and the cause was unlawful mining.

In a statement released late on Monday (Jan. 23), the Karebe gold mining firm claimed that unlicensed miners had blown a hole through a wall meant to stop water and intrusion.

Three other workers required medical attention in a hospital after becoming hurt. Their health status wasn’t immediately known.

In Kenya, mine explosions are infrequent.

Karebe claimed that it has been contacting local government representatives since 2021 in an effort to step in and prevent unauthorised miners from infringing on its licence area.

The business said that on Monday, January 23, a representative had stopped by the area and told illegal miners to cease what they were doing.
