President Muhammadu Buhari will receive an award from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in appreciation of his contributions to the defence and advancement of democracy in the subregion.
The ECOWAS Chairman, Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau, reportedly mentioned this during a private conversation with the president of Nigeria on the margins of the ongoing 5th UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries in Doha, Qatar, according to the president’s spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu.
Embalo claims that the reward for the president, who is preparing to leave office after serving a two-term term, was approved by the sub-regional body’s leadership.
He insisted that the president had done more than any other person to assist democratic governments in West Africa and that he had also done a particularly good job against the establishment of non-democratic regimes.
Buhari will be listed on the “Roll of Honour” at the new ECOWAS headquarters building when it is finished in Abuja, according to the organization’s chairman.
He claimed that by doing this, future generations of West African citizens would be able to learn about Buhari’s remarkable accomplishments and imitate his admirable traits.
Buhari praised the idea, emphasising that democracy is the most effective means to unite disparate groups of people and a reliable tool for achieving national progress.
