Ghana’s Army admits to violence and apologizes

Kofi Amankwa-Manu, Ghana’s deputy defense minister, has expressed regret for military excesses following the deployment of troops early on Tuesday in Ashaiman, a suburb of the nation’s capital Accra.

Since a young military officer, Trooper Imoro Sherrif, was allegedly stabbed in the town on Saturday, March 4, 2023, soldiers unleashed mayhem on certain people of Ashaiman on Tuesday while helicopters flew over the region.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) revealed that their operation in the area to track down the assassins of a military member had received high command approval.

In a statement released on Wednesday, GAF stated unequivocally that the purpose of the military action authorized by the Military High Command was NOT to exact revenge for the soldier’s murder but rather to find those responsible for the horrible crime.

Mr. Amankwa-Manu, the deputy defense minister, apologized on behalf of the ministry if respectable, innocent citizens of Ashaiman were affected by these actions, but he said that the ministry would not retract its support for the operation.

According to the Ghana Armed Forces’ statement, after the operations at Ashaiman-Taifa and Tulaku, military forces picked up roughly 184 suspects, ranging in age from 21 to 47, and turned them over to the Military Police.

“Trooper Sherrif, who was stationed in Sunyani, was in Accra on a course and had requested permission to visit his parents in Ashaiman, where he grew up, but was found in a pool of blood in the early hours of Saturday near the Amania Hotel in Ashaiman,” reads a report from the Accra Post.
