When a journalist first learned about something seemingly unimaginable in 2017, which is now well-established as a thriving sperm harvesting sector in the nation, it took courage for him to follow his interest.

In a story titled “Sperm Traders,” a TV3 journalist followed the progression of how largely prostitutes started a sector of their industry by selling discarded condoms.

Most of these women, who are mostly found in the Upper West, Ashanti, and Greater Accra Regions, have developed solid business relationships with cartels and ritualists and profit greatly from them in exchange for the used condoms.

The syndicate is so well-coordinated, according to one of the ladies who spoke with the TV3 journalist, that there are even cleaners at some hotels who work as their suppliers.

“I have hotels in Accra that the cleaners supply me with the used condoms then I tip them because I earn much from the used condom sale,” she said.

Most tellingly, these women claimed that many of their clients are allegedly pastors.

One of the women, Kiki, emphasized that she had recently dropped off a shipment with one of these men before she walked in for the interview in order to explain how many of these men of God obtain their supplies.

“It’s the errand boys of the pastors that deal with me, not the pastors themselves. I will not mention names but a lot of the condoms are requested by pastors. I even delivered some consignment when coming here and I will collect my money when I am going back. I know the pastor’s house, he also knows mine, I will take my money.

“Two weeks ago, I delivered some to an evangelist in the Volta Region,” she said.

Kiki added that even though she would never allow this to happen to any of the men in her family, she would still sell condoms in order to support herself and her 10-year-old daughter.

She also admitted that she has strengthened her spiritually because she knows the trade she is in is risky.

She would always be willing to provide used condoms as long as they were paid for.

“Anytime I go to Kumasi, people come to me for the used condoms containing sperms. I don’t know what they use them for but so far as they pay me, I sell them,” she explained.

In addition to outlining some of the negative effects of people using such condoms for rituals, a fetish priest in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region added that he had previously voiced concerns about this issue.
