Tems, a musician from Nigeria, has responded to the criticism she received for her view-obstructing Oscars attire.
The co-writer of “Lift Me Up” raised eyebrows with the size and perceived size of her Oscars gown. Notably, when views of her seated in the middle of the row in the Dolby Theatre elicited sympathy from bystanders for those seated behind the view-blocking garment.
The Ukrainian fashion firm Lever Couture, based in Los Angeles, created the cloud-like dress for the Nigerian singer, which was styled by Dunsin Wright and had a voluminous arc that went over and behind her head.
The outfit created a splash as Tems walked the champagne-colored carpet at Sunday’s Oscars in Hollywood. It was first displayed during fashion week in Tokyo last September.
The 27-year-eye-catching old’s outfit put her on several best-dressed lists, but it also took on a life of its own on social media, where the conversation centred on how it negatively impacted Oscars attendees.
In fact, Tems was visible in the theater’s aerial shots as well as when the camera cut to the audience.
The conversation has included a mix of compliments on the wearer’s appearance, humorous memes, and accusations of rudeness.
Tems published pictures of herself wearing the same dress with the caption “oops” in response to the criticism that accompanied the look. It’s been a while since I’ve seen one of them.
