A task force is being established by the Otumfuo Memorial Gold Coin project to combat galamsey, or illegal gold mining, in the Ashanti Region.
The task force, which will be known as the Asanteman Task Force Against Illegal Mining, is an effort by the Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Coin to fulfil its corporate social responsibility obligations.

The Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Coin project is attempting to promote ethical gold mining in the Ashanti Region through this.
The task force will support the Asantehene’s efforts to bring order to the artisanal and small-scale gold mining industry in the Ashanti Region by focusing primarily on intelligence-related tasks.
The arrival of the task force, according to E ON 3 Group, the business that was authorised by the Bank of Ghana to mint the Otumfuo Commemoration Gold Coin, is a monument to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s tireless efforts to eradicate unlawful gold mining from his mineral-rich Kingdom.
“The task force will play a major role in anti-illegal gold mining activities. His Majesty has warned chiefs under his authority that any of them whose lands and rivers have been destroyed by illegal miners will be summoned for questioning and anyone who fails to provide a reasonable explanation will be sanctioned to serve as a deterrent to others. The time is up to support the Asantehene on this move, and the Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Coin will do exactly that,” a source at E ON 3 Group said.

Year of Action
The Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Coin Project is aware of and respects the fact that His Majesty is not opposed to gold mining, but he detests those who carry out their operations in an irresponsible way that harms the environment.
In order to preserve the lands and water sources in his Kingdom from the operations of illegal miners, Otumfuo, who has been at the vanguard of the fight against illicit gold mining, has declared 2023 an action year.
According to the E ON 3 Group source, the task force will look into galamsey activities and give the Asantehene a report in order to help him achieve his anti-galamsey goals.
The source added: ” The investigations will be wide, covering even chiefs suspected to be engaged in the illegal activities, and we appeal to Otumfuo to destool any chief found culpable.”
