Netizens are reacting to words made by Jackie Appiah concerning the country’s ongoing LGBTQ debate.
Following US Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to Ghana, the debate over the contentious anti-LGBTQ measure introduced in parliament has heated up.
On Saturday, April 1, 2023, United Showbiz panelists took turns sharing their perspectives on the matter, and Jackie Appiah’s remarks in particular sparked discussion on social media.
Some guests, including, James Gardiner, A Plus, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo shared interesting comments about it on the UTV show which also featured Jackie.
It was Jackie Appiah’s turn to share her thoughts but she responded in the Akan language: “Mepawkyew Me dier medwene me ho oooo” which translates to, “Please, as for me, I am thinking about myself.”
Although it amused some of her coworkers, it did not sit well with some social media users, who chastised the actress for remaining silent on the matter.
According to them, Jackie Appiah should have criticised the conduct, and her influence could have helped to change people’s attitudes.
Meanwhile, Ghanaians have criticized President Akufo-Addo for disobeying his government’s position and avoiding telling Kamala Harris the country’s view on homosexuality in public.
When Kamala emphasized the importance of broadening and respecting the rights of the LGBTQ community during a press conference at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo revealed that his government had intervened to modify the current anti-LGBTQ Bill, which has drawn widespread condemnation, including from the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
