Following a tip that he was looking for a buyer for a pistol, North West police detained a man on a firearms charge; nevertheless, they later connected him to the rape of at least eight women in Klipgat.
On Thursday, the man was taken into custody at his Sofasonke neighborhood home when a gun was discovered in his hands.
He is accused of many rapes, home invasion robberies, attempted murder, and possession of illegal weapons and ammunition.
The 39-year-old man allegedly raped ladies who were walking from bars in Klipgat. age range of the victims was 23 to 38.
The first rape occurrence, according to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, was reported in 2021.
When police investigated evidence that the suspect was attempting to sell the pistol and ammo on Thursday, he was first detained on a firearms charge. Funani stated that he was later connected to the string of rapes.
“Following preliminary crime scene investigations, it came out that the individual was a wanted, alleged serial rapist who escaped arrest for the past two years,” Funani said. “During the arrest, the suspect was found in possession of a pistol. According to reports, the guy preyed on ladies who were returning home on foot from Klipgat bars early in the morning.
She said, “I’ve heard he would also rob his victims of their personal items.”
In Mabopane, Gauteng’s Dubai Section, an AK-47 with 33 bullets, three magazines, and 25 pistol bullets were discovered in a hut after the man led the police there, according to Funani.
On Tuesday, the man is scheduled to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court.
