Beginning on Monday, Nigeria’s airports will be closed for two days as aviation workers begin their second strike of the year in opposition to working conditions and compensation.
Due to unpaid arrears and the federal government’s decision to demolish some aviation agencies’ Lagos offices to make way for airport expansion, the unions that represent pilots, engineers, control tower operators, and other airport employees announced on Friday that they would skip work on Monday and Tuesday.
Should the current strike not provide the intended objectives, the Union threatens to go on an extended strike.
The group also bemoaned additional issues the sector is dealing with, including as subpar facilities, jet fuel shortages that frequently cancel domestic flights, and a lack of foreign exchange that prevents international carriers from remitting their ticket sales.
