The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards this year have been characterized as fiercely competitive, particularly the ‘Artiste of the Year’ category, which features eight candidates.

Some supporters of the nominees, including Black Sherif, Stonebwoy, Sarkodie, King Promise, Camidoh, KiDi, Piesie Esther, and Joe Mettle, have brought to the public’s attention how their favourites are alleged to have “ignored” the award by choosing not to solicit votes as in the past.

Piesie Esther is the only musician among the eight who has widely publicized her nomination and urged her followers to vote for her with only four days till the 24th edition of the VGMA.

A visit to these musicians’ social media profiles reveals how active they are in promoting their music, whether it be a new single or album.

With Stonebwoy dedicated his social media channels to his ‘5th Dimension,’ which was published on April 28, artists like Black Sherif and Sarkodie seem to shed more light on their tour outside of Ghana.

Although it is not necessary for a VGMA nominee to publish materials to officially announce their nominations, some worried supporters claim that their action does not inspire them.

On their social media platforms, King Promise, KiDi, and Joe Mettle have not provided any proof of their multiple nominations. And in the instance of Camidoh, who is considered to be the “culprit” of this trend, his manager George Britton praised him for working hard to earn nine nominations at the VGMA back in March.

The Ghana Music Awards’ ‘Artiste of the Year’ category, in which KiDi now holds the title, is without a doubt the largest honour.

Kuami Eugene, the ‘Artiste of the Year’ for 2020, emphasized the significance of the award in an interview with the Delay Show in April 2023. He talked about how winning it propelled him to a greater position.

“It was through Artiste of the Year that I got the deal with Adonko Next Level; I signed with itel; I even did something with Stanbic Bank, and so it helps. It pushed my brand to another level,” Kuami revealed.
