A Nigerian comedian made fun of the continent’s most populous country’s royals by joking about their conspicuous absence at King Charles III’s coronation on May 6 at Westminister Abbey.
The owner of Pararan Mock News, often known as Pararan in Nigerian comic circles, thought it was significant that Otumfuo, whom he identified as the King of Ghana, had been invited to the event despite their being no Nigerian king present.
“Where are the Nigerian kings who won’t allow us to breathe, throwing their weight around and disturbing public peace without being useful to their people?
“All they know is to claim to have royal blood while taking advantage of the people at every turn; marrying multiple wives yet refusing to play the role of development agents,” he charged in pidgin English.
Among the four African royals who were invited to the coronation was Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The Kings of Morocco, Lesotho, and Eswatini are the others.
With the exception of the Moroccan King, who was represented by his sister, all three people went in their individual capacity.
Although Nigeria has one of the most complex traditional systems in West Africa, no royal was given an invitation to Charles III’s coronation.
The Kano Emirate in northern Nigeria, the Sokoto Caliphate, as well as some Kingdoms in the country’s southern parts, are known to have had enduring ties with the British ruler, though.
