Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) Reviews Obi’s Initial Video Evidence
On Saturday, the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) witnessed the screening of the first video evidence presented by Mr. Peter Obi and his party, the Labour Party. Obi and the Labour Party (LP) are petitioners in the case labeled CA/PEPC/03/2023, which challenges the election that brought President Bola Tinubu to power.
The respondents in the petition are President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
During the latest hearing of the petition, the court watched two videos that were submitted as evidence. Prior to this, the court had admitted the flash drive containing the videos as evidence. The videos were obtained through two subpoenas dated May 30 and June 6, which were served on the ChannelsTV station.
The videos consisted of interviews with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, regarding the election preparations. The second video featured Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC.
These videos were presented through a subpoenaed witness from Channels TV named Lucky Obowo-Isawode. While all respondents in the petition objected to the videos, they reserved their responses for their final written addresses.
In addition to the videos, the petitioners, represented by their counsel Jibrin Okutepa, submitted EC40GEU forms from six local government areas of Benue as evidence. They also tendered form EC40OG(1) from one local area of Benue, along with a certified true copy of the form from INEC regarding Benue.
The court marked and admitted all these pieces of evidence.
Although the respondents’ counsel objected to their admission, they reserved their responses for their final written addresses.
Meanwhile, the five-man panel, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, adjourned the proceedings until Tuesday to continue hearing the petition.
