South Africans are certain that more is required to keep police officers accountable than body cams. Following the Tuesday, 20 June announcement by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) that officers would soon begin donning body cams, this has happened.
JMPD Acting Chief Angie Mokasi as saying that the department has received several accusations of corruption, bribery, extortion, and kidnapping by JMPD officers.
According to Mokasi, the body cams will aid in addressing these problems and averting the “cool drink” phenomenon. “The City is in the midst of acquiring body cameras that will help eradicate problems centered around corruption. They will actually contribute to the cops’ and the public’s protection, added Mokasi.
Since last July, at least six JMPD officers have been fired for corruption, according to eNCA.
