An assortment of opinions have been expressed on Twitter in response to a popular video showing four women doing their dancing techniques at Cape Coast Castle in the Central Region.
The women could be seen twerking at a portion of the impressive space in the video that SikaOfficial posted on his page.
The women, who were described as being Black Americans, reportedly travelled to Ghana and visited a number of noteworthy tourist attractions while there.
One said “for the ancestors” as the others applauded while the group was twerking.
Social media users who watched the video expressed conflicting feelings about the location because it is well-known to have been a former slave plantation and is renowned as the house of the ancestors.
Some Twitter users said it was insulting for the women to perform that way at such a revered location, while other internet users thought there was nothing wrong with twerking at the slave tourist attraction.
A netizen with the user name LMAO GPT shared his perspective and wrote: “I don’t know about y’all but if I were a slave ghost haunting a castle where my ancestors were tortured, the last thing I would want to see is some tourist twerking on my pain. That is just disrespectful in so many ways”.
“Are we really surprised that people who had the strength to survive centuries of slavery can also have some fun and twerk for their ancestors? Let’s them live a little and honor their ancestors in their own way”, a view shared by another netizen.
