The bulk of the nation’s banks have complied with the order to buy “bulletproof” bullion vans for carrying cash, according to Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor Dr. Ernest Addison.
This comes after the Central Bank ordered all banks to purchase “bulletproof” bullion vehicles by July 1, 2023, to transport cash from one branch to another.
Prior to then, other robberies targeting cash-transporting vans had resulted in the death of the police escort.
In June 2023, the BoG ordered all financial institutions to buy armored bullion vehicles to transport their money.
Dr. Addison stated during the MPC press conference that the banks have so far complied with the order.
The Governor is concerned about the ongoing robberies targeting the bullion vans in the meanwhile.
“Ideally, there should be police escorts who should not be in these vans. But rather following these vehicles”.
“I have seen a lot of clearances from the Ministry of Interior to aid these imports, and even those that have already brought in these cars”, he concluded.
