Lomé Hosts Regional Workshop on National Health Workforce Accounts
From July 24 to 26, 2023, Lomé is playing host to a significant regional workshop focusing on National Health Workforce Accounts (NHWAs). Twenty countries are actively participating in this international gathering, which has a primary goal of enhancing the NHWA capacities of the World Health Organization (WHO)’s national focal points.
The WHO defines NHWAs as crucial systems that facilitate the gradual improvement of health workforce data availability and quality, as well as its efficient utilization. Such advancements directly contribute to the realization of universal health coverage and the attainment of health-related sustainable development goals.
During the opening address of the workshop, Dr. Fatoumata Binta Tidiane Diallo, the WHO Representative in Togo, emphasized the critical importance of an efficient and resilient health system for effective development in Africa. Highlighting the essential role of a qualified workforce in serving the population, she emphasized the indispensable nature of a robust health system.
The workshop’s primary objective is to enhance the capacities of all stakeholders involved in the implementation of NHWAs, with the ultimate aim of improving the overall performance of national health systems. Dr. Wotobe Marin, the Secretary General of Togo’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection, praised the implementation of National Health Workforce Accounts as an excellent tool for acquiring quality information, thus enabling effective and efficient management of health workers.
