ECOWAS Heads of State Arrive Abuja for Niger Republic Coup Discussion.

Eleven of the 16 heads of state and government from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have arrived in Abuja for an emergency meeting about the military coup in the Niger Republic.

The heads of state and government will convene in a closed-door session to discuss recent events in the neighboring Niger Republic, particularly the next course of action to be taken in response to the resolutions and ultimatum issued to the junta that recently ousted the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.

Bola Tinubu, the president of Nigeria and chairman of ECOWAS, President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, President Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco of Guinea Bissau, and President Everiste Ndayishimiye of Burundi are among the leaders present at the meeting, which is taking place at the Old Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

There are also the presidents of Cote d’Ivoire’s Alassane Ouattara, Mauritania’s Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, Ghana’s Nana Akofo-Ado, Senegal’s Macky Sall, the Benin Republic’s Patrice Talon, and Togo’s Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé Eyadéma. Members The Gambia and Liberia are represented by their respective ministers of foreign affairs.

The leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali, Chad, and the volatile Niger Republic are not present.
