The Nigerian Republic must now have a functioning constitutional government, according to an order from the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS.
At the ECOWAS Extraordinary Meeting in Abuja on Thursday, August 10, the President of the ECOWAS Commision, Omar Alieu Touray, made the statement while reading the decision of ECOWAS on the Niger coup.
In addition, ECOWAS urged the African Union, partner nations, and institutions to support the sub-regional body’s decision.
The coup leaders have resolutely rejected all attempts to negotiate with the military junta in the Niger Republic, according to ECOWAS, who further denounce the ongoing arrest of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family.
Direct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to promptly activate the ECOWAS standby force with all of its components, according to a portion of the resolution.
“Order the deployment of the ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.
“Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.”
