After receiving a red card for stamping on Michelle Alozie of the Super Falcons during England’s victory over Nigeria, England striker Lauren James was given a two-game suspension.

James received a red card for stamping on Michelle Alozie of Nigeria during the Lionesses’ match in the round of 16.

The referee initially gave the 21-year-old, who has been England’s player of the tournament, a yellow card, but after VAR requested a review, the yellow card was changed to a red one.

James is immediately suspended for England’s following game after collecting a red card, but her suspension was increased by two games after being examined by a Fifa disciplinary panel.

James was sentenced to a two-game suspension after FIFA’s disciplinary committee determined that his actions were classified as “serious foul play” rather than aggressive behaviour.

The ruling makes James, who has three goals in four games, eligible to play in the championship game or third-or fourth-place playoff if England advances that far in the competition.

An official FIFA statement read: ‘The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed a two-match suspension on England’s player Lauren James following a violation of article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code at the FIFA Women’s World Cup match England vs Nigeria.

‘The suspension will be served for the FIFA Women’s World Cup™️ quarter-final and the next international fixture following that.’

James apologized through the FA for her behavior, which led to her dismissal in the 87th minute of England’s victory over Nigeria.

‘Lauren is really sorry for her actions which led to the red card and is full of remorse,’ the FA said. ‘It is wholly out of character for her.

‘We will be supporting Lauren throughout and will be putting forward representation on her behalf. We fully respect FIFA’s disciplinary process and will not be making any further comment until after any decision has been made.’
