The movie “Barbie,” which has been playing in several Algerian theatres for a few weeks, has been outlawed, according to a Monday report from the local 24H Algerie news site.
An government source was cited by the news site in the story as saying that the movie “promotes homosexuality and other Western deviances” and that it “does not comply with Algeria’s religious and cultural beliefs.”
Barbie and Ken, played by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, go on an adventure in the real world in this film produced by Mattel Inc. (MAT.O). Since its release on July 21, the movie has surpassed $1 billion in worldwide box office receipts.
Both Kuwait and Lebanon have also outlawed the movie.
The Algerian Ministry of Culture controls the content of movies screened in theatres and has the authority to prevent their presentation.
