The French ambassador Sylvain Itte was told to leave the country by the Nigerian junta, which took control on July 26 in a coup, according to a statement released by the foreign ministry on Friday.
According to a statement from the ministry, the ambassador’s unwillingness to accept an invitation to meet with the foreign affairs minister of Niger played a role in the decision to remove him.
Without going into more detail, it continued by saying that other actions taken by the French government were likewise against Niger’s interests.
Former Niger colonial power France has demanded that President Mohamed Bazoum be reinstated after being removed from office.
A request for comment on Friday was not immediately responded to by the French foreign ministry.
