Pastor Taiwo Odebiyi was detained by the Ogun State Police Command for reportedly burning Sukura Owodunni, 21, on fire during a deliverance service.
On August 17, 2023, the incident took place at Cherubim and Seraphim Maberu Parish in Offin, Sagamu, when the victim went to the church for a special prayer at the pastor’s invitation.
It was learned that the victim was instructed by the pastor to purchase candles, local eggs, and perfume for the particular prayer.
The priest is alleged to have lit the candle and applied the perfume to the woman’s body while praying for her.
Owodunni allegedly burst into flames as soon as the pastor lighted the candle, severely burning her chest, shoulder, and legs in the process.
After CSP Abdulfattah Ogunsanya, the Divisional Police Officer in Adigbe, and his colleagues attacked the scene on Tuesday, August 29, the suspect was promptly taken into custody.
The State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the event to Punch and added that additional investigation has begun to determine the details of the case.
“The lady was said to have been abandoned to fend for her medical bills after the incident. The victim has been taken to the hospital for medical attention. Our men have arrested the suspect. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department after the preliminary investigation is perfected,” the PPRO added.
