The National political Congress’s (NDC’s) Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has expressed concerns about Ghana’s political stability, noting the country’s continued economic difficulties.

On October 2, 2023, he expressed concern about possible political upheaval in the nation during an interview. He argued that the only thing keeping the country from degenerating into chaos has been tolerance among citizens.

He emphasised that other coups that were started throughout Ghana’s history had occurred under less dire conditions than the current economic woes.

“Ghana is more than ripe for a coup d’état but the only thing that is saving us is the tolerance of Ghanaians.

“If you look at our history, you will see that the things that have led to previous coup d’états in this country were even less than what is happening now. But the only thing that is saving us is the tolerance and our collective history,” he said.

While praising Ghanaians for their tenacity, Nketiah issued a warning against using disruptive behaviour as a temporary fix.

He emphasised that such steps may simply exacerbate the issue and prolong an unstable cycle with possibly implacable new leaders.

He issued a warning against underestimating the possible effects of a coup and the necessity of defending Ghana’s democratic ideals.
