The ban on TikTok has been upheld by Senegalese authorities, who also require that the corporation sign an agreement for the development of a system to delete accounts.
At a recent press conference, Moussa Bocar Thiam, minister of communication, made this announcement and mentioned ongoing conversations with TikTok.
The TikTok app was banned in August in response to the detention of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, claiming the programme’s usage to disseminate “hateful and subversive messages” as a danger to the stability of the country.
Senegal’s reputation as a stable democracy in West Africa was damaged by violent riots in June that were the result of a power struggle between President Macky Sall and Sonko.
The government demanded better platform regulation during talks with TikTok, enquired about algorithm functionality and data security, and pushed for just rewards for content producers to help young people support themselves through social media.
