On Wednesday, a diverse gathering of South Africans demonstrated in Johannesburg in solidarity of the Palestinian people as the deadly battle between Israel and the militant organization Hamas continues.
According to several, they were participating in the demonstration to support Palestinians who have endured decades of injustice.
“I did more and more research and I came to the conclusion that not only have I been lied to, and spreading myself, but my religion was being used to undermine the rights of the Palestinian people,” said protester Pamela Ngubane.
The Israeli ambassador to South Africa was called to resign by protesters outside the US consulate, who also denounced Washington for sending weaponry to Israel.
A similar demonstration calling for a stop to violence took place in Cape Town.
The BDS (Boycott, Disinvest, Sanctions) movement, which continues to demand a boycott of Israeli goods as well as disinvestments and sanctions against the nation, sponsored the protests.
They took place while the Jewish community in South Africa also made plans to support Israel this week by holding prayer gatherings and solidarity events.
The government of South Africa demanded on Sunday that violence between Israel and Palestine end immediately.
