During parliamentary proceedings on Wednesday, a Kenyan Member of Parliament was directed to take off the traditional Palestinian scarf that he was wearing.
Amidst the violence between Israel and Hamas, Farah Maalim stated he was wearing the scarf in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
“Everyone in Kenya needs to support Palestine,” he declared.
However, the National Assembly’s speaker gave the MP an order to take off the scarf, claiming it was against parliamentary protocol.
Fellow MPs also condemned the legislator for “disrespecting” the House rules.
It comes a few days after Kenyan police briefly detained three people for participating in a pro-Palestinian meeting in the capital, Nairobi.
President William Ruto has expressed his government’s full support for Israel in the ongoing conflict.
