Ghanaian sports marketer Jon Boafo tweeted that Senegalese superstar Sadio Mane has completed the takeover of Boyrges Foot 18, obtaining a majority ownership in the French club.
Mané, 31, is believed to have been considering investing in a football team for some time. His decision to invest was influenced by his friendship with Cheikh Sylla, the former president of Bourges Foot 18, who will continue to lead the team.
The club’s acquisition is viewed as a means of assisting young Senegalese football players in gaining access to elite competition.
Mané reportedly gave the team some money to help them with player recruitment during the summer transfer window.
Situated in central France, 250 kilometres from Paris, the club has never competed at a level higher than the French second division. Bourges is ranked second from the bottom in Championnat National Group B.
During his tenure at Anfield, Mané won six titles, including the Premier League in 2020 and the Champions League in 2019.
Mane, who joined Al Nassr in August 2023, has scored six goals in ten appearances for the Riyadh team. Mane is now a player in the Saudi Arabia Pro League.
