After a protracted divorce proceeding, Asamoah Gyan, the former captain of the Ghana national team, was ordered by a Ghanaian court to compensate his ex-wife.
After a three-year legal fight involving accusations of infidelity and suspicions about his paternity, the court decided that he is, in fact, the biological father of their three children.
According to the court’s ruling, Asamoah Gyan must give Gifty Gyan, his ex-wife, a variety of assets and financial support. To be more precise, he has to give her a house in the UK, another in Accra, a gas station, and two cars.
In addition, Gyan has been directed to pay $2,100, or £1,729, or 25,000 Ghanaian cedis every month, for the upbringing and care of their children.
For a number of years, this court battle has persisted, made worse by Gyan’s prior infidelity allegations and his doubts regarding the biological father of their three children. But a DNA test has finally removed his worries by proving beyond a shadow of a doubt his biological relationship to the children.
On Asamoah Gyan’s petition, the court formally cancelled the marriage, which had already ended. In its ruling, the court recognised that Gifty Gyan, who was largely in charge of the kids’ upbringing while Gyan focused on his professional football career, had made a substantial contribution to the acquisition of the homes in dispute.
Asamoah Gyan, the all-time top scorer for Ghana with 51 goals in 109 appearances for the national team, announced his retirement from sport in June. In addition, he is the African goal scorer with the most goals in World Cup history, with six goals in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 tournaments.
