Harry Maguire, a defender for Manchester United and England, has responded to a Ghanaian member of parliament named Isaac Adongo’s apology for drawing comparisons between his on-field exploits and the nation’s vice president, Mahamudu Bawumia,’s handling of the economy.
Adongo contrasted Maguire’s and Bawumia’s performances in a video at a parliamentary session last year, saying, “He became the biggest threat, tackling Manchester players and giving opponents assists.” Mr. Speaker, Maguire will score for them when you see the opposition try to score.
In a video that went viral on social media on Tuesday, Adongo praised Maguire as a “transformational footballer” and said that the vice president now “roams at the IMF with a cup in hand” during the 2024 budget debate in the parliament.
He said, “If you remember last year, I was very quick to compare [vice-president] Mahamudu Bawumia to Harry Maguire,’ he said. ‘Mr Speaker, I now apologise to Harry Maguire.
When I gave your defender as an example, Mr. Chairman, you became very irate. Maguire has turned the corner and is now a football player that can change a game. Harry Maguire is currently leading Manchester United in goals scored.
“Mr Speaker Harry Maguire is now a key player for Manchester United; as for our Maguire, he is now roaming at the high heavens with a cup in hand.
“As for our Maguire, the economic Maguire, he was able to get pensioners to leave their homes and come and parade in the streets.”
Reacting to the video, Maguire posted on X, saying he’s accepted Adongo’s apology.
