Ghana enrolled 618 delegates for the 28th Conference of Parties, according to information published by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28).

Compared to the number of delegates the government sent in 2022 and 2021, the number of delegates is over 100% higher.

Ghana dispatched a delegation of 350 and 337 delegates from COP 26, which included both state and non-state players, to the conference in Egypt.

It has also been reported that development partners provided funding for a portion of the delegates.

There are 523 people on the “party overflow” list and 95 people on the official “parties” list.

Despite the nation’s current financial situation, Ghanaians on social media have expressed amazement by the sheer number of delegates being sent to the conference.

Starting on November 30, 2023, and ending on December 12, 2023, is COP 28.

At the upcoming Conference of Parties 28 (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and Minister of Transportation Kwaku Ofori Asiamah are due to introduce Ghana’s new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy.

The goal of the strategy is to foster an atmosphere that will encourage Ghanaians to adopt electric vehicles.

The National Electric Vehicle Policy is anticipated to set market signals and contribute to the transportation sector’s decarbonization in accordance with Ghana’s National Energy Transition Plan 2022–2070 and international climate change commitments.

The policy’s Core Values and Principles include inclusivity, equity and fairness, circular economy principles and practices, battery recycling, and health and safety when using electric vehicles.

The policy’s implementation framework and several important measures will direct the nation towards its decarbonization goal.

The Policy will be implemented in Phase as follows:

  1. 2024-2026. This phase will be the Preparatory Phase. The key focus will be on addressing the challenges and barriers to EV uptake.
  2. 2. 2027 – 2035. Ensuring a successful take-off and successful transition to EVs in Ghana. The target is that by the end of this phase, EV penetration rate will be around 35%.
  3. 3. 2036 – 2045: During this phase, efforts will be made to ensure that, by the year 2045 no new petrol or diesel vehicles will be sold or imported into Ghana.

The ministry believes that the policy will be a living document that will be updated when the need arises to keep up with the changing dynamism in the industry and other commitments.
