Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has sparked controversy with the appointment of his son-in-law, Oyetunde Oladimeji Ojo, as the head of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA).
Ojo, who is married to Tinubu’s eldest daughter, Folashade, has become the first relative chosen by Tinubu for a position within the federal government.
The presidency defended the appointment, highlighting Ojo’s ten years of experience in the housing and hospitality sectors, along with his previous role as a member of the House of Representatives.
Nevertheless, the decision has triggered a strong reaction on social media, with some asserting that there were more qualified and deserving candidates than Mr. Ojo.
“Blatant nepotism is a leadership weakness. Unfortunately, Nigerian leaders don’t see it as a form of ethical failure,” an x user wrote.
Certain individuals have stepped forward to support the selection of Mr. Ojo for this position, asserting that his connection with the president should not disqualify him from government roles.
His appointment is a component of the president’s initiative to revamp the administration of the housing ministry.
The Federal Housing Authority (FHA), under the ministry’s purview, is tasked with facilitating the provision of affordable homes throughout Nigeria.
