X, previously known as Twitter, has finally compensated its former staff who were terminated from the company’s African headquarters in Accra, Ghana.

Agency Seven Seven, the legal representative for the staff, announced on Sunday that it had successfully negotiated on behalf of the former employees of Twitter Ghana Ltd, securing a fair settlement and repatriation expenses for foreign staff.

The employees were dismissed in November 2022 following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the social media platform in October of that year, which was accompanied by his decision to reduce the workforce by half.

Facing the possibility of legal action for non-payment of owed redundancy payments, the former staff, who received less than a month’s notice before their dismissal, were ultimately compensated.

Ghanaian employment law mandates the payment of redundancy following negotiations with affected employees.

Agency Seven Seven emphasized the importance of this rule in Ghana’s Labor and Employment Law landscape, highlighting its role in mitigating the hardships faced by employees during mass redundancy exercises by corporations.

Many of the terminated employees had recently taken up their positions after relocating from neighboring countries.

The prolonged battle for compensation reportedly had adverse effects on their mental health and financial situations. Elon Musk’s decision to downsize resulted in 6,000 job losses globally, with the stated objective of cutting costs.
