For the second consecutive week, the biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” continues to surpass expectations, securing the top spot at the box office despite the debut of two new films and the underwhelming performance of Sony’s “Madame Web.”
The Paramount film, featuring Kingsley Ben-Adir, generated $13.5 million in its second week, surpassing its production cost of $70 million by grossing nearly $72 million domestically in North America.
Reinaldo Marcus Green’s directed biopic, centered on the Rastafarian legend’s journey during the creation of his 1977 album “Exodus” and leading up to a significant concert in Jamaica, has resonated well with audiences. Despite some of Marley’s greatest hits being nearly 50 years old, the film has effectively showcased the enduring appeal of his music.
“One Love” outperformed “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Hashira Training,” securing the second spot with an impressive $13.5 million. The Japanese anime series installment debuted with $11.7 million from a limited number of locations compared to “One Love.”
“Ordinary Angels,” a faith-based film starring Hilary Swank, claimed the third spot with an estimated $6.5 million.
The struggle continued for “Madame Web,” the superhero movie, which only managed to produce $6 million in its second week, bringing its total to just over $35 million.
Universal’s animated film “Migration” rounded out the top five, earning $3 million after its 10th weekend.
Despite a slow week, industry experts anticipate a significant uptick with the much-anticipated debut of “Dune: Part Two” in the coming week, potentially dethroning “One Love” from the top spot.
