Tanzanian songstress Zuchu has issued an apology following her suspension from all artistic activities in Zanzibar for six months, a consequence of a performance deemed inappropriate by local authorities on Kendwa island last month.
The Zanzibar Arts, Census, Film, and Cultural department asserted that her explicit language and gestures during the performance contradicted the islands’ customs, traditions, and culture.
Zuchu has been requested to submit a written apology.
In a video posted on her Instagram late on Tuesday, the artist expressed regret for any offense caused, emphasizing that her intention was to entertain, not mislead.
Zuchu, also known as Zuhura Othman Soud, stands out as one of East Africa’s most successful musicians, achieving milestones such as being the first female artist in the region to reach one million YouTube subscribers in a year and surpassing 500 million YouTube views, making her only the fifth female artist on the continent to achieve this feat, according to her label WCB Wasafi.
