Former President Peter Mutharika has expressed concerns over what he describes as a leadership crisis in Malawi under President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration. Speaking during a Nation Address at Page House in Mangochi district, Mutharika lamented that Malawians are facing various struggles and hardships.
According to Mutharika, the current state of affairs in Malawi is characterized by a lack of effective leadership, leaving citizens grappling with issues such as hunger and the inability of the country to print its own passports. He criticized Chakwera, accusing him of leading Malawi into turmoil rather than fulfilling the promises of prosperity.
Addressing incidents of political violence, particularly in Lilongwe where members of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) were attacked, Mutharika blamed the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) for perpetuating a culture of violence and disregarding democratic principles. He expressed concern over the alleged manipulation of the legal system and attempts to pass legislation to hinder his political aspirations for the 2025 elections.
Despite these challenges, Mutharika affirmed his candidacy for the 2025 Tripartite Elections, expressing confidence in the DPP’s ability to govern and his readiness to lead the country once again. He emphasized the unity within the party, noting that disruptive elements have been removed to ensure its cohesion and effectiveness.
