Former South African President Jacob Zuma was involved in a car accident but emerged unscathed, according to local news sources. Reports indicate that a drunk driver collided with his official state vehicle on Thursday evening. While police confirmed no injuries, they arrested a 51-year-old man for driving under the influence and recklessness.
A member of Zuma’s party, uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), alleged that the crash might have been intentional. Zuma, who was suspended by the African National Congress (ANC), has been actively campaigning for MK ahead of the upcoming May election.
The incident took place in Zuma’s home province of KwaZulu-Natal at around 18:40 local time. Despite being entitled to an official protection team, the former president was involved in the accident.
Zuma’s involvement in the crash comes amid his disqualification from the upcoming election due to a prior jail sentence. Opinion polls suggest a potential decline in ANC’s vote share, possibly falling below 50% for the first time in three decades. The influence of MK, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, could further impact ANC’s support in the region.
