The former governor of Nigeria’s central bank, Godwin Emefiele, is set to appear in a Lagos court on Monday, facing fresh accusations of office misuse and corruption leveled against him by the anti-corruption agency last Friday.
Emefiele is already confronting procurement fraud charges in another court in Abuja, the nation’s capital, which he has vehemently denied.
According to reports from local media, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has lodged new allegations against Emefiele, including claims of fraudulent foreign exchange allocation totaling $2 billion, allegedly conducted without proper bidding processes.
The charges assert that these actions occurred between 2022 and 2023, as stated by the commission.
Emefiele, who was suspended last June by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and subsequently detained, faces escalating legal challenges.
During Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria has reversed Emefiele’s foreign exchange policies and opted to devalue the national currency.
