According to the US Agency for International Development (USAid), approximately 90% of pharmacies in Liberia are involved in the illicit sale of stolen medication donated by aid organizations. USAid Mission Director Jim Wright expressed concern over such “acts of fraud,” stating that they hinder access to essential medicines for Liberians who are in need.
“This situation is unacceptable, as it means that medicine is only accessible to patients who can afford to purchase them,” remarked Mr. Wright.
In response to this revelation, six Liberian civil groups have initiated a nationwide media campaign. Its purpose is to monitor the distribution of aid medical supplies and to raise awareness that donated medicines are intended to be provided free of charge and should not be sold.
Mr. Wright emphasized the need for increased accountability measures, including the prosecution of individuals found guilty of stealing and selling donated health supplies.
As of now, the Liberian authorities have not issued a statement regarding this matter
