President Bola Tinubu has designated April 7 as National Police Day, a declaration made during the inaugural Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, on Monday night, April 15.
Representing President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima delivered a speech titled “Courage Under Fire: A Tribute to Our Police Force.” In it, he highlighted the enduring commitment of the Nigerian citizens in the face of security threats, attributing it to the dedication of the police.
The administration has been resolute in its aim to modernize and professionalize the Nigeria Police Force, aligning it with the nation’s values and aspirations. As part of this effort, comprehensive reforms are underway, including significant investments in training and capacity-building.
Recognizing the importance of continuous training, Shettima emphasized the necessity of equipping police personnel with the requisite skills for modern policing. He also announced the Federal Government’s approval of the first week of April as Police Week, with April 7 designated as National Police Day in Nigeria.
In his address, Shettima reiterated that the police force is not merely viewed as defenders of the nation but as individuals with humanity. He emphasized the importance of humanizing the force and expressed gratitude for their unwavering commitment and valor, which fosters confidence in brighter days ahead amidst challenging security situations.
