Police in Soroti City have apprehended a pastor for confining critically ill individuals within a church premises while purportedly praying for their recovery.
The Galilee Ministry of Christ Church, situated in Amen “B” cell, Amen ward in Soroti City West, had an assembly of over thirty Christians, including five individuals in critical condition, on Monday afternoon.
Confirming the incident, Mr. Edison Obukulem, the spokesperson for East Kyoga police, stated that Pastor Simon Peter Ogoba had been taken into custody, and the patients were rescued and transported to Soroti Regional Hospital for medical treatment.
Mr. Obukulem cautioned pastors against admitting patients into their churches, emphasizing that pastors lack medical expertise and should instead advocate for medical intervention.
“Pray for them but do not admit them; always refer them for medical attention,” he advised.
Pastor Ogoba explained that they welcomed individuals with various health issues and commenced prayers and fasting for their recovery. He noted that while most patients were referred to Mulago Hospital, some cases might not necessitate hospitalization, but rather prayer. He justified caring for patients within the church to prevent distractions at home.
“So we tell them to remain here so that we can pray until they heal,” he remarked.
One patient, Mr. Emmanuel Okello, disclosed that he was diagnosed with cancer in 2023 but received inadequate treatment at local hospitals. He opted for divine intervention and sought assistance from the church. Despite noting some improvement, he expressed willingness to return to Mulago Hospital but lacked transportation.
Mayor Patrick Peter Emaru of Soroti City West Division expressed astonishment at the situation and encouraged pastors to prioritize people’s health by encouraging them to seek medical assistance from qualified professionals.
