President William Ruto is slated to chair a special Cabinet session on Tuesday morning to address the ongoing flood crisis in the nation. Isaac Mwaura, the government’s spokesperson, reported that nearly 170 individuals have lost their lives due to the floods in the past month.
The situation intensified on Monday, with approximately 45 fatalities confirmed as villages were swept away near Mai Mahiu, situated about 60 kilometers from Nairobi. However, the Kenya Red Cross indicates a higher death toll of 50 individuals.
President Ruto acknowledged criticism from local governments regarding the government’s perceived slow response to the floods. Nevertheless, he defended his administration’s actions and pledged to explore additional measures during the Cabinet meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
Responding to inquiries about declaring the floods a national disaster immediately, President Ruto emphasized prioritizing the provision of essential aid to affected areas.
As meteorologists forecast further rainfall in the East African country, the government has opted to extend school closures. Over 130,000 individuals have been displaced, with many seeking refuge in schools for shelter.
